Heavy rain and 50mph gales set to batter the south after thunderstorms end heatwave

Bangla sanglap desk: Heavy thunderstorms that yesterday swept the UK have brought a dramatic end to the heatwave, with forecasters warning strong gusts and rain will continue to blight the summer weather this weekend.

Temperatures have plummeted throughout the country after storms brought downpours, hail and strong winds to parts of the UK on Friday.

And the wet and windy weather is expected to continue overnight and on Sunday across England and Wales, a Met Office spokeswoman told the Standard.

A yellow severe weather warning for heavy rain and strong winds has been issued by the Met Office, covering London and the south east, the south west and Wales from 3am to 3pm on Sunday.Highs of 23C are predicted in London on Saturday, with sunny spells and some showers during the day, before a band of rain moves in from the south west.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: “London will see a mixture of sunny spells and one or two showers today, and will feel a lot less humid and hot. “Much of the UK can expect sunshine and showers, with a risk of thunderstorms across Wales, northern Ireland and Scotland.”

An amber severe weather warning for thunderstorms remains in place in parts of Northern Ireland until 5pm.

Ms Mitchell added that the capital will see some rain on Sunday, with temperatures continuing to cool to 22C.
